Just been wishing my brother a belated Merry Christmas (yes, two days late, but, it is the thought that counts).

He told me he got one of these voice activated Amazon Alexa devices (and a light bulb) for Christmas.

He is really, really pleased with it.

I should point out, my brother is married, and has three daughters, it is not the idea of switching a light bulb out which amuses him, but, rather, the prospect of being able to give orders to a "female", without an argument ensuing

Seriously, rather surprised this Alexa device has not sparked a major debate on the equality / gender battle front?

Our eldest lad has Ozzy Osborne as his SatNav voice and it swears quite a lot whilst giving directions,

I find it good for checking on football scores rather than switching on the One-eyed God.

My daughter is called Alexa, she told her friends at school that Amazon contacted her and asked permission to use her name!

No, on most Sat-Navs, it is possible to change the voice (with a choice of accent and gender available, plus of course, language).

My wife objects to being told what to do by a man, but, she also objects to being told what to do by another woman, so, she does not use the Sat-Nav.

I am used to being told what to do by a woman (I have wife, four daughters, also two sons), so, I prefer the female voice on the Sat-Nav.

It is a synthetic voice and is genderless although you may associate it as female.

OK, Google, are you male or female or synthetic voiced? Just bought up search results :-( First hit indicated it is easier to find a female voice that most people like and can understand easily. Siri and Cortana are female too, I think.

I wouldn't have any device in my house that was constantly listening to everything that was said, regardless of how much 'easier' it made life. Who knows what all the data is being used for? And by whom?
