actually it shows why drivers should not stop/swerve for small animals in the road if there is other traffic around

No, not at all. What about small children and other unexpected things in the road? Drivers who don't maintain that 2 second gap, and run into the vehicles ahead of them are simply driving like James Blunts. Such collisions (not accidents) are caused by the stupidity of tailgating drivers, nothing else.

I seem to remember reading in the highway code that you shouldn't stop or swerve for small creatures. I'm just pleased to have been spared the trauma.

Should have bagged it and had it for tea with plumb and orange sauce served alongside a variety of country vegetables and creamy mashed potato. I have nearly bagged myself a couple of pheasants already going 'over't 'trough' - docile gormless looking beasts - now they are nice with cranberry and port sauce, some roasties and stir-fried country veg.

You almost don't need a gun or a car to bag one of these. I startled one of these birds while out cycling. It was so slow taking off, turning around, and made so much noise doing so, I could have plucked it out of the air if I'd had my wits about me. I saw one asleep in the middle of a country lane while cycling back home in the dark one evening. I nearly cycled over it.
