At the risk of sounding like a discredited yogi - it is worth playing such events out in your mind and imagining how you would react/cope in a difficult situation. This projection might just be useful if you find yourself in a fraught predicament.

If you're braking extremely hard, brace your arms and shoulders against the bars for all your worth.

No I agree with you there O - part of doing something sucessfully is rehearsing it either physically doing it or mentally- emergency braking was very useful for me one time cycling through London Bridge at green lights when someone decides to cross without looking - though had a fraction more time than Sh4rky by the looks of it.

Point taken. I thought I was okay as they were all looking directly at me... apart from the one playing hide-and-seek behind the young lass!!

As for shouting earlier I'd probably feel a little silly as they were clearly waiting (again, apart from the hiding lad)... he's lucky I don't have an airzound.

Is the general thought that my speed was a tad excessive then, given that the lights could change at any time?

When I hit a primary school kid, I looked into the bus stop, saw two ladies glued to their seats, and then - mistakenly dropping my guard, I continued at speed. What I didn't consider was the kid, obscured by the bus stop poster, desperate for a wee, who gamely ran out from behind the shelter into the path of 100kg of metal and flesh moving at 20mph +

I don't mind shouting a warning - I think it's underrated. If people want to laugh at my reedy voice, so be it!

As for speed, I've found it worthwhile wiping a lot of mph off (and steering a wide course) when confronted with pedestrians in the road (particularly kids who like to play chicken) as it gives you more time to react if they do something unwise....

What a useless bunch of little twats.. seriously find it annoying how there's no awareness at crossings anymore.. Don't know what goes on at schools/home theses day, but it was drummed into our heads, the green cross code that is. Same with level crossings and train tracks!

No doubt you would have had his useless scuffer parents wanting to sue you if it had gone wrong to keep their Sky TV and tubes of Pringles rolling it! Sorry for the rant but glad it came out okay.

Only the teachings of Mr Miyagi...

I only ask as your method of "projection" (or visualization) is really prevelent in sports psychology and karate.

Generally Karate Training is nowhere near as glamorous as Mr Miyagi made it look…its essentially endless repetition of moves and stances.

Karateka's (those who study) do this not just to gain muscle memory (or so that they look good on camera) but to ensure that, when the sh*t comes down, they don’t have to "think" about what to do..

I could go on for ages about the philosophy's of this stuff…but bottom line is, its good to visualise.

I second you on that Jonny- any sucessful performance in sport is down to mind skills, mental positivity and being able to rehearse it in your mind and out in practice

I had a mate in the British Judo team - he taught me a few things about preparedness/visualisation.

Did Karate Kid lie to me? I feel cheated.

The kid's not looking, and isn't even on the crossing. If you spent all your life worrying about other people's idiocy you'd never leave the house.
Take heart in the fact that your awareness and quick reactions mean that at worst he'll need some new underwear.

I'd have rung my bell while approaching, and maybe (maybe) tried to give them even more room. But, ultimately, if someone is absolutely set on hurling themselves in front of you, theres not all that much you can do.

Hit a ped a couple of years ago on a one way street; two sets of peds set off to cross, from opposite sides of the road, all looking in the wrong direction. I damn near stopped, but still winded one of them.

WHY are the kids on the road ???? i thought you were supposed to wait on the path.

that whole scene is unbelievable, i suggest you send the video to all the local schools in the area and ask them why their kids don't know how to cross a road.

in fact, take a still shot at 18 seconds and send it to the local paper...

OMG.jpg

unbelievable

You have, like, met kids? ;)

i have three of my own, and if they conducted themselves like that, they would get locked in the little dark room under the stairs for a very long time

kids need to be corrected, i would certainly send the clip to the local school, "if" the school is any good they "should" care about what the kids get up to whilst wearing their uniform.

Yes, and the more I meet, the more I like my dog.

I don't see that Sharky could have done much more. He had moved out to avoid the kids who were already crossing, that twunt moved from the back of the group and wasn't even looking where he was going. Darwin's theories will make short work of him when there are more silent electric vehicles on the road.

IME, if we had to shout or ring bells on approaching every group of school kids that are looking at us, we will be in for a whole heap of, at the very least, jeering.
