I would disagree with the criticisms of the kids 'not being on the path'...however full happy to criticise the kid for crossing the road without looking.
I think there was little you could do to avoid it. Certainly, if you slowed and were ready to stop that is the main thing. The kid was completely hidden.
Now, in the future. Perhaps give school children even more room. I tend to give a "beep beep beep" style whistle when I'm not sure what people will do. It's not that loud, but I've had people about 5/10 meters away turn around to see what it was. It doesn't always work, but a lot of the time it'll make people look (even if they weren't about to jump in front of my bike). I'll use this method, at times, when filtering. If people have their car window open there's no reason why most people wouldn't be able to hear it and have a quick look in their mirror to see my mug
