Its why I dont ride with groups. I only have me to shout at when I fall off. Plus when I ride a 50 miler I like to think I have done it under my own steam and not in the wake of someone else.

Obviously none of us (except the OP) were there, but generally the riders on the front should be pointing out obstacles to prevent sharp-braking.

However, I wouldn't be too disheartened.

It sounds - from my perspective - like the crash might have just set the whole group on edge and darkened the mood. The guy who crashed is obviously going to be miserable because he crashed, you're on edge because you feel fingers might be pointed at you, the guys on the front are probably feeling sheepish because they might feel they should've prevented it...etc Try not to take it personally.

If overlapping wheels touch, the bike behind goes down, the bike in front rides forward. It's the responsibility of the guy behind not to overlap/touch wheels. Feel no guilt,@cyberknight.

Sudden braking by the guy in front doesn't help. But sometimes it happens. You have to be able to trust the guys you are riding with, and know how they ride, and they need to know you. Maybe if you rode with them more regularly it would help. Our club runs group riding coaching sessions during the summer months on a traffic free circuit, and this is very helpful.

I just set up my own group.. Approx 2 to 8 usually with extremely explicit pace (23.5kmh) and very friendly people.. And I don't need to attract new members as it is not a club

Nail on head.
Clique mentality is inevitable with clubs, whether it's the 'rich Johnnie come latelies' or the 'we were here first' crowds both can be pretty obnoxious in my experience. Some folks join/create clubs out of a sense of community and some out of a sense of superiority. Used to skydive quite a bit and it was exactly the same.
