There we were, my friends and their daughter and me, waiting on our bikes to cross a busy road at a toucan crossing thing. About 30 yards to the right there had been an accident involving a van and a car. Lots of bent and broken bits, nobody hurt, as far as I could see. But 2 out of 3 lanes were obstructed, so traffic was filtering into and through the one remaining lane.

Tl turns red, green man lights up, 11 yr-old sets off across the road, driver of large truck, having squeezed past the wreckage and seeing open road ahead puts foot down - accelerating his huge truck straight towards the child.

She froze. I yelled. The mum screamed. Smoke came off the lorry's tyres.

He just sat in his cab staring ahead. I dare not trust myself to speak to him: if he'd said one word in response that was not total, groveling, abject apology, I would have had him out of the cab and given him a good thrashing. Assuming the mum and dad didn't get there first.

We had to explain the the daughter that it wasn't her fault; it was the lorry driver's fault. We had to explain that just because the green man came up, it didn't mean it was safe to cross - because many motorists were complete idiots who were not fit to be behind the wheel. We had to explain that when the green man shows, don't attempt to cross until every vehicle you can see for tens of yards in any direction is actually stationary - and even then be aware that any one or more of them might start to move for any or no reason whatsoever, and threaten your well being.

It spoiled what had otherwise been a jolly mornings' jaunt.

Well done to you and the parents for not pulling him from the van and thrashing him before he had a chance to apologise!

You did bloody well not to twat him.

He certainly did, if I had been in that situation and it was one of my kids I am not sure I would have been able to show the same restraint

I have had a few preventative 'quiet words of advice' in the ear of the local boy racer (well he is about 25) that goes up and down our quiet road. Most of the houses have young children and wheel spinning out of his girlfriends parents driveway and hurtling up the road on a sunday arvo is not acceptable.

Not dragged him out the car and kicked living sheee ite out of him yet though.. I am the definition of restraint as you were.

That sounds close. I always tell the kids "Green means go if CLEAR" not an automatic go. Equally the same for zebra crossings - you can step on but don't continue to cross until the car has stopped. Too many close calls in the past.

Sickening, that. On a nearby road to me a couple of years ago, a five year-old boy and his brother were crossing on the green man doing exactly what they'd been taught to do when a wagon driver ignored the red light against him and smashed into the lads, killing the five year-old outright. I saw the saddest sight in the world a few days later when his tiny coffin was being taken from the hearse to the church that was within 50 yards of the crossing he'd been killed on. I swear, if I'd have witnessed the killing, there'd have been two funerals that day.

I spend a significant part of my working life telling people that the green man does not mean that it is safe to cross - it means that it is time for you to check that the traffic has stopped and then cross, if safe to do so.

On the other hand, the truck driver was probably a cyclist, momentarily thought that he was on two wheels, and that it was therefore OK for him to ignore red lights.

.

It's not always as simple as that though.

Last year I was waiting at a local pelican crossing - the roads is 2 lanes in both directions. Lights changed, I wait for 3 lanes of cars to stop, the 4th - 2nd lane out from me - was some disctance away (more than a couple of good stopping distances) so I started to cross. I then notice it in the corner of my eye and it comes to a stop just pushing me lightly.

The reason I started to cross was that if I had waited for it to stop in a conventional fashion (driver sees read light, starts to slow down etc), the lights would have changed before I could finish crossing the road, and being a very congested road drivers have no patience for that and start to move forward...

The problem is that the green man sequence isn't long enough to wait for cars to stop. (Boris Johnson take note, reducing the pedestrian crossing time will result in more of this)

btw, I've since then witnessed similar incidents several times at the same crossing - a car from the same direction and usually in the same lane going through at speed on red - possibly to due the fact that the crossing is just after a big road junction so drivers get the green light and just hit the accelerator.

bastards - why can't people wait.

.... but the number of people, both young and old, that will step out onto the road without looking becasuethe man is green never ceases to amaze me.

+1 Oh dear, bit of a crass joke if ever there was one.

Is it? Is it really?

Mebbe it's just a bit close to the bone. Having spend the day cycling around London on Tues, I was virtually a lone figure stopping at red lights and crossings.

Mebbe he's just nudged the conscience a bit sharply eh?
