Am I a man or a mouse ?

Checked the roads and I think I will stay unbruised in front of a hot choc with scotch chaser for today, the road isn't gritted (and is all uphill) for half a mile and anyway, tomorrow...
I'll be trundling in to work whatever the weather. Beats catching disease on the bus or getting stuck in the car.

Perversely, the fozen ground makes my off-road, farm track/ bridleway Summer commute possible again, which is great as it's normally just mud in winter. No traffic just a nice peaceful ride for the first 6 miles or so. Could do with some snow here though. I don't care how cold it gets, as I wouldn't swap the bike for a 4 wheeled metal box stuck in gridlock for anything.

its not the temperature, is the ice thats the thing.

prepared myself as much as i can, got some new walking boots today and studded tyres are on order. if i have to walk a bit now and then its OK.

one thing i do worry about is getting in the way of cars on the country lanes. every time they have to go around me is a potential problem, but then its up to them to drive in an appropriate way !!!

My finger tips tend to be the things to suffer. Oh and then my knee joints.

I wear liner gloves under my winter gloves, but when it goes under 3 degrees C they dont work. I need to move more to warm up I reckon.

The cold's not really an issue, just add a couple of extra layers for that - merino wool's ideal!

Ice is the problem. The prospect of 6 weeks off the bike with a broken collar bone Does Not Appeal. I didn't go on this morning's club run because the run-off from the fields will have frozen and though it may be passable with care, or on foot, being in a tight group is inviting calamity....

I will be commuting as usual tomorrow, and the rest of the week, even with snow forecast. The roads I commute on are gritted, so reasonably safe: whereas the walk on icy pavements to the bus stop will be treacherous. And anyway, it's still much more fun!

Commuted in all last week when it was -1c or so,this coming week looks a lot worse -6c forecast and am worried about icy patches at 5am.
At the minute I'm planning on driving in for a few days and see how things develop later in the week.
No shame in missing a few days IMO.
Have still not decided whether or not to go down the studded tyre route yet, maybe I would if I didn't drive.

Still undecided whether to drive in tomorrow-what do you reckon cycling into Manc at 7am and leaving about 5pm?

It's probably OK if you stick to main roads tbh,are you on your skinny tyred bike?
I'm going to get the hybrid ready for Tuesday and if it looks OK out there I'll risk it.
-6c though, any water leaks and it's gonna be lethal,I nearly came off last week on one such patch in a cycle lane near work

On the skinny tyred bike.

The bit of road leading off the M60 roundabout to Sale Water Park is pretty bad for black ice but much safer than going the direct route up the A56 due to ridiculous amounts of traffic.

A56 is never a good choice,even in a car.
One of my cycling work mates was OK last year when it went to -15c coming from Macc to Stockport on his skinny tyred bike,I remember him having icicles on his buff when he got there

My bike needs a bit more attention tomorrow to get it ready for later next week,or the hybrid that hasn't been touched for months, either way it's car tomorrow.
