It was okay this morning in Birmingham - very little ice to speak of. Happily, they compensated by generously spilling lots of diesel all over the place!! Arrgh!

Cold not really an issue for me yet -3 last few mornings but i have stopped my communte, as it is mainly on untreated rural roads and the Black ice is deadly !

Took the car this morning, was -5c at 5.15am,roads were OK in the main.
Might attempt it on hybrid tomorrow as it was lovely and sunny coming home and it just doesn't feel right not cycling home when it's like that.

I made it in today on the mountain bike safely enough, just to find out that the company had told everyone not to go in because the roads were too dangerous.

I hung around for most of the day and rode back on the cycle path - which was 2-3in deep in snow and great fun . It's all melting and getting ready to freeze into ice for tomorrow at the moment though.

I really do need to get some guards for my mtb though, the steady stream of cold, black, salty water on the gritted sections was horrible.

slushy ride on the minor roads this morning. main roads were clear but very wet. guess who forgot to put the overshoes on !!
Towpath was virginal snow so was good to ride through that. cobbles under the bridges were fun part wet then dry then part wet.

walk up the cobble bank was also fun in my SPDs with cleats

I've been commuting on my MTB and loving it. After the initial squeaky-bum moments when the wheels start sliding about, you get to realise which ones are going to come to nothing and when to dab a foot down. It's pretty bad on the lane to get to my house and on the roads leading up to it but the main roads were only covered in a thin layer of slush. I ended up taking an off-road route home yesterday through some woods near my house (see pic) and had so much fun that I'm doing it again today!

I've put the flat clip-in inserts into the SPDs and been riding in my waterproof walking boots with gaiters on and stayed warm and dry.

Been snowing all day and we've just been emailed warnings saying the roads around Derby have got REALLY bad.

Currently weighing up the risk of cycling back and possibly coming off or getting flattened by someone else losing control, against getting a lift and walking back from Nottingham station on ungritted pavement in cycling shoes and slipping over and breaking my neck!

Nice to have a choice

Got to try out my new DIY Studded Tyres today. They are big heavy hard rolling things but they do seem to work despite my continual fear that I'm losing the back end to the left

(it is just me I always think that when I'm nervous about the surface)

On gritted roads they patter along and just feel heavy. In uncompressed snow they struggle a bit for traction as they are built out of semi slicks so only have lugs on the sides, but they stand upright firmly and I didn't feel too nervous.

Where they really come into their own though is on compressed snow and ice. They grip enough to make the bike ride true and I was able to speed up and slow down without sliding. They were so good I actually went for the snow topped cycle path in preference to the gritted road (and traffic jam)

I was very slow this morning as I didn't trust them too much but I'm slowly getting used to them and hopefully I can get my commuting speed back up to something sensible
