I took two cheap semi-slick tyres, and screwed a 20mm screw through the middle of every second knob on the outer tread on either side of the tyre. That worked out at 80 screws per tyre. Then I layered the inside of the tyre with three layers of duct-tape to cover over the screw heads.

What it means is that I have screws sticking out at about 45[sup]o [/sup]from the sides of the tyres.

This is basically what they look like: -

Er not so good. The duct-tape on the screws in the rear didn't stick down and the screws mangled the rear tube today .

I'm going to have to look into a better covering method for the inside

Well I set off for work this morning, about 5 inches of snow on our road and couldn't stay in a straight line so walked to the main road.

Sticking to the car tyre tracks I managed 5 miles in just over an hour so called work and said I wouldn't be making it in. Turns out even the boss hadn't made it so am now back home and ready for a cup of tea.

What about another deflated innertube along the inside of the tyre? Bulky but 2 layers of rubber should be good.

I'm in the middle of doing something similar at the moment and I intend to fit an old worn out tyre as a liner. The old tyre is a 27" so will need to have a bit cut out of it but I think it should work. Cutting of the wire bead should allow it to expand to fill the MTB tyre.

That's pretty much what I'm planning, but I'm going to try and glue it in place first. I may also add a tyre guard in the rear.

-8 on Friday morning on the way to work and i was well toasty when i got there !

Just a side note , My 14 year old started a paper round a couple of weeks ago just when the cold snap started to bite ! The chap in the shop said that they couldn`t believe that she was still delivering them on her bike in the weather we`ve had

Not missed a commute yet....
Havn't watched the temps here but last night it was -2 with a bitingly cold wind, chill factor ? gawld knows what. My face was like ice.
Not too much snow here and my commutes 90% main roads so no problems there. This morning (saturday) i felt lethargic. Commutes only 2.5 miles and i always extend it to 7 to 10 miles each way, but not this morning. Gave up at the 3 mile mark, went to work and got a coffee. Does that count as wimping out ? Ironically, its the 'mildest' its been for days this morning...possibly 1 or 2 degrees.out

Last years snow was much worse here, lots of snow and ice for about 2 or 3 weeks. This years nowt so far (in Peterborough)
