Am I missing something, why doesn't anybody stock anything I want to buy?

If you look at sales items on any of the online stores you will find a plethora of shoes in size 3 and some in size 53 what you won't find is any in size 43. why is this? I think all retailers stock what thet know they can sell and gave a few unusual items to show willing but when pink tyres don't sell as well as red or black you don't carry many that you know you will have to reduce to sell.

The older I get, the faster I used to be ...
A lot of retailers - LBSs - are little more than brand boutiques anyway. It is extremely rare for me to find anything I want in shop - I've commented before how unlikely it is for me to find a bike in my (small) size in stock in any of the local shops. So I shop online. But even M&S has stopped stocking trousers with 30" waist in store - you are supposed to order them to store and pay for them - before you can try them on, or check the fit, or colour, and if you don't want them you will then be refunded. Imagine the outlay if you want to do what most customers can do without thinking - result - M&S have lost a customer - much as most of my LBSs have. Rant over .

M&S what a dump, poor quality, massively over inflated prices and poor quality staff, well that describes my experience of the Lincoln branch.

I don't miss it. It used to be the first port of call for basics - a long time ago.

Totally agree. I went round three LBS asking after a 90mm stem. I didn't specify brand, material or anything as I wasn't fussed. None had one. Ordered from wiggle and was there by midday the next day. Not exactly a specialist item either.

I get they can't stock everything, of course they can't. But they could try to help. How about 'I'm sorry we don't have one but let me show you what we can get in for you and it will be here in 2 days' or whatever not just sorry no. Just basic customer service really.

This. And the sneery attitude. I was pleasantly surprised with London fields cycles when I enter in for Magura brake blocks. Not on display but I asked and the guy said , " we don't put them out as not a huge demand and we put in demand items on display, we have em in the workshop give me 20 seconds"

Compared to Evans London bridge. " why would you want them on your bike"

Didn't know cmc was a cycle shop now, thanks for that I'll have a run up. Last time I was there I bought a Honda fireblade and a Yamaha virago on the same day lol
If you know chesterfield then the old motorbike shop CMC near chesterfield royal hospital is a bike shop now. Went in there yesterday to see if they could fit suicide levers and they got the book out and charged me cost price for them in advance. (I'm getting them to fit them for extra), he could have had the parts in for Tuesday The number is 01246 234000 if you want to try them.

Carlisle also. They seem to specialize in clothing for the tasteless, colourblind, incontinent and, seemingly, the oddly shaped. My LBS on the other hand have no experience of this market(save for my odd shape)and therefore we may assume that here at least,M&S are safe from a takeover from the LBS.Can you imagine what an M&S bike might look like? The thought just occurred to me.

It's still the same owners, they moved the motorcycle business to Clay Cross and tried to rent or sell the building for a few years before deciding to use the place themselves again and branch out.

Yep. It seems to me that LBS are only really stocking stuff that's going to help them sell new bikes. If I want a helmet, pannier rack, pedals, bottle cages etc they have great stock. They are definitely not geared towards helping you maintain your existing bike. This lack of customer service is apparent right across the industry. The bike shop I used to use religiously tried to sell my mum a big steel springy Dutch style bike because they looked at her and assumed that's what she wants even though I went in and said she needs a hybrid, thin tyres, no suspension. They didn't listen to the customer who ultimately is going to decide whether to part with their money or not. We left and went across the road and she got something she's really happy with and felt attended too. And don't even get me started on only stocking big sizes of bikes!!

Also just used a mobile bike mechanic for the first time. He told me he would pick them up on Tuesday night. He never appeared. I texted him, oh I got the date wrong. He said he would call us with a quote before he did the work - nope. He said he would have them back in one day. He text on Saturday morning can I drop them off in an hour. No mention of what he did to them or how much we were going to be charged! I'm sure the work is fine and he charged a very reasonable rate but would I use him again? Probably not.

It's not difficult stuff is it?
