Its a good website.

There was a thread about when that Icelandic volcano erupted and all flights were grounded.

It was amazing watching the north atlantic go from a swarm of planes, to just one or two in a few hours.

We live on highish ground overlooking the Fylde and due west from us is Blackpool airport. We never hear aircraft taking off but once or twice a week we see the odd passenger jet droning over on approach. We have a huge vista of sky to our west and what's really interesting about this website is how far away the aircraft are when we can see their vapour trails in cruise altitude of 30,000 ft or more. We often see vapour trails going north-south or back and wonder where they are going.

Yes, I can see planes passing quite a distance away. When it isn't cloudy that is.

Conversely, some pass here that are shown as being far away, but then seem to almost fly past right above me. For example, I saw a DHL flight pass by me that was shown to be about 30 miles further south!

Now, I realise that their height will have something to do with it, but is there some sort of optical illusion going on too, or has the site just made a mistake?

I might be wrong.

I live under the approach to Luton. When I last checked (during the Icelandic volcano) it was on a slight delay.

I think not.....
Everytime I have gone out to have a look and the plane was where it was shown on the map

Yes it seems quite accurate from what I've seen of it.

It does refresh itself every few seconds, but when a plane gets below about 150 feet *Hold on, there's an Icelandair approaching, oh the irony!* , it stops and disappears after a minute or two. Does when landing at Glasgow anyway.

I live right in the middle of the Heathrow NW Kent stacks (near Biggin Hill) and the site is definitely right

I think the website is pretty accurate in time and location. Just heard three aircraft overhead in fairly quick succession and the website is indicating three planes from Heathrow flying over my area heading towards Sydney and Hong-Kong. Amazing - on the third one, I could see the track of the plane on the website as it came out of Heathrow and started to hear it as it went overhead on the map.

Now a Cathay Pacific 747 to Hong Kong is going overhead. Thought you might like to know...

I'm waiting to be a chief witness to a crash here

Actually, I wonder what would happen. Would it break up into pieces as you see it doing at Air Traffic Control when seen on the telly, or would it simply disappear?

Yes, I start looking for them when they reach a certain point, and you really can hear them coming!

Brilliant! it is quite cloudy here today and I missed today's Air Tahiti Nui flight. In fact, I have only seen one plane since getting up this morning, OY - VKF, a Thomson Holidays A330. That said, I did see two freighters (both MD - 11s, one Lufthansa and the other UPS), a Thomas Cook '757 and an Aeroflot 767 in the early hours of this morning, but, does only seeing the lightbulbs actually count??:biggrin:
