Those look stupid and pointless, especially mounted in that position.

However I am considering getting some sort of wheel lights (maybe blue or green?) for next winter. Have seen a few cycle commuters with various sorts of wheel lights recently and they can be pretty eye-catching, even from behind/head-on where you would think they wouldn't be visible.

I feel that the greater the visibility of a cyclist the better. However, we have to keep it practical.
I would question the flashing mode of an amber light. You would not want a vehicle pulling out in front of you, thinking that your intention (indication) was to turn at the junction. Could end up being a tricky situation to argue in the event of that happening,

This. Also I have lights that attach to my spokes that should help visibility from the sides. I keep them on constant rather than flashing.

Do you have a link to the spoke type lights? I got a pair of valve lights. They worked at the time I received them through the post. They were the type that came on with movement. Less than 2 week later when I was about to fit them on the valves, they just ceased to function. I had not even fitted them on the bike. I tested the (button type) batteries-3 in each light and they had good power. They were very cheap ones, but I had expected them to last a bit longer than they did.^_^

I use Fibre Flare lights (in addition to an ordinary rear light). One on each seat stay. These have 360-degree visibility (except, obviously where I or the bike get in the way) and they look great IMO. They were a bit pricey tho. (Can't remember how much, but I remember wincing).

I'm sure some sourpusses think that they represent an evil conspiracy against cyclists, and that by using them I am a traitor to cyclists everywhere, or something like that. But I rather like them.

It's actually difficult to argue against red Fibre Flares mounted on the back of a post or stay IIRC. The ones I've seen weren't offensively bright, they're a steady light, the rider can usually see they're working and they're a nice big illuminated area.

The white ones should die, though ;)

I believe Hi Viz does work at doing the job it was designed for in respect of being a very visible type of safety clothing. I wear it all the time, including hi viz ankle bands. At the moment, (in the absence of legislation) it is up to the individual what they wear of course, be it a cycle helmet, hi viz. clothing etc.

With the increasing interest in cycling, sadly and inevitably I believe we will see an increase in cycle casualties on our roads. I also believe that eventually certain aspects of cycle wear will become mandatory. The cycle helmet being top of the list.
At night, I'm not entirely sure how a motorist who has missed my two front lights or my two rear lights (with side emitting elements to them) will be any more likely to see me wearing a yellow top. He/she has to look for me first. I was by chance wearing a noteworthy cycling top today with two Hope 1 front lights and a bl**dy cyclist didn't see me!!!

As for helmets becoming mandatory, let's at least get some kind of meaningful certification/testing for them before we do anything stupid like that.

Might help on some roundabouts, but I suspect that by the time a driver sees it you're about to get flattened. From that perspective, my preference is several front lights, one straight ahead, and two that point slightly to each side.
