Amy and Kyle's Around the world challenge

Yesterday I listened to an interview with a guy that walked round the world. Took him 7 years (but he did walk on 7 continents). I don't believe he set any records! https://www.tomturcich.com/

I've followed her since she had about 7k subs on her YouTube, so quite a while now.

I'm actually curious why the hate from some towards her?

Perhaps "hate" is a bit strong, but however you wish to call it, dislike, whatever. What's the basis of it?

I get that she can be a bit quirky. I personally like that. I find her different to other channels. I don't find her boring in the slightest. I've tried checking out some other cycling channels & I just find many of them to be really quite boring. I love the fact that she embraces that she's 'weird' & doesn't try to hide it, as someone who is also a bit 'weird', I'm all for that.

I know she was going on a bit about how she was getting zero punctures with her tyres & now they're getting quite a few. Maybe it's the extra weight? Different surfacing? Weight plus surfacing? I've no idea.

But yeah I'm curious to see what the basis is of some folks negativity towards specifically her.

Mmmmm..... whilst it's certainly been '20+change' for a lot of the time, they've also had a varying degree of headwind for that time. Their last day, with a helpful but not huge tailwind, was nearly 25kph average moving speed.

To me, the interesting aspect is that they are doing repeated very long days, in the 13-14 hour range mostly, but at least once up to 15.5 hours, without apparent issues. Given that they're doing shopping / cleaning / vlogging as well, it's pretty impressive that they are not - again, apparently - suffering much from that as yet. Amy was chased by a Slovakian micro-mutt yesterday: mild drama. Oh, and lifting a 25kg bike over that fallen tree looked less than fun too :-)

Yes, the way they are banging out 13 hour plus days is astonishing. They must be good t riding through pain as I can’t believe they haven’t had sores and general wear and tear. I’d not want to wear Lycra for that long day on day! Great mental strength to match their physical ability. From the short videos they seem to have had a fairly uneventful ride except for more punctures than expected. I’m looking forward to a podcast at some point to add details.

There certainly cracking on with the distance and early starts. They appear to have finished a bit earlier today. Pity Kyle doesn't feature a bit more. Got to respect them for banging out the mileage.

Just seem to be ticking away now. Another 2 countries since I looked yesterday.
A metronomic 20*+change kph moving. That's astonishing discipline to ride that slowly for a pair of their ability [its about the pace I ride a long audax, except in reality I alway start quicker, which isn't a useful strategy], when they're still very fresh.
Bodes well for the attempt. Which is about all I have to say at this stage - we need some drama!!! :P

*This has actually crept up a bit, still below 21! Not surprising now the wind has finally turned around to Westerly-ish.

but its europe everyday is a new country new culture new language, different landscape, if theyd routed via Italy and spent 13hours riding in the rain like on the Giro the other day they might not have been so fresh by now. Bangkok to Singapore will be difficult, theyre hitting the start of monsoon season, and Australia will be a slog, theres plenty of drama ahead imo

Should not be in pain. Just under half the time off the bike. They are what 30 and 31, in their prime years for such an undertaking. Ticking over nicely at the moment. Good to see they have settled into their daily routines.

They are cracking out some good daily miles. She did mention it was tricky fitting in the daily stuff i.e. making meals, washing kit, drying it... I can only imagine things will get tougher once off the beaten track.

Presumably the gameplan is to make hay, as it were, to have something in the bank for tougher sections. Do we know how much their kit weighs?

Do we know how much their kit weighs?
They weighed it before leaving and Amy's bike, fully loaded (without water I think, but I'm not certain) was 25.5kg and Kyle's was nearly 27kg. So, 'quite a lot' really, whether or not that included liquid. They did appear to have a lot of duplication in their packing; two first aid kits for example, and proper Allen keys in addition to at least one multitool. Perhaps they'll shed some of this along the way !

This is their bike setup and weighing video:

Is that kph?

If it were mph, it would be a bit swift for a couple with loaded panniers, but kph seems reasonable.

This is also something else that I really like about her channel - she talks like a normal English person: mph not kmh.

I'm from England. When someone starts talking to me in km or kmh they could be throwing anything at me, I don't have a clue.

She's said from time to time maybe she should convert to kmh. I hope she doesn't.
