That looks very much like them trying to finesse the final distance to be as close to the 18,000 miles / 29,000km target as possible.
The new planned route still goes through Alaejos, the antipodal point to (very near) Wellington Airport, so that's not changed. Their road distance to the start point from where they are now would be very close to 2,000km if they went quite directly, which most of the planned route does. They actually need nearly 2,200km from where they are right now to reach the target, and that odd loop near Bordeaux is approximately 200km. (That's all conjecture. I've not seen anything anywhere to suggest any of it.)
