It seems to me like a case of "Emperor's new clothes".

At a meeting of arty type BBC twonks, no doubt over copious skinny lattes and croissants, this idea was pitched, and they all went "oh yaah! yaah!".

Instead of having the cojones to point out that the door was over there, and don't let it hit you on the way out.......

Yeah, its just like books too. I saw a really crap one the other day, so like, yeah, all books are just rubbish.

Honestly, there's good and bad tv catering to a huge audience. I have sky+ and am lucky to easily record plenty of excellent quality drama, documentaries. There's plenty of crap, but plenty of good stuff too. Finding the worst (no matter how abundant) does not negate the good there is too any more than the top 10 best sellers being Katie Price, Jamie's Kitchen, Jeremey Clarkson etc etc etc mean all books are rubbish.

What's channel 5's excuse?

They were the only channel to show the brilliant 'Justified' over here, not that all is forgiven, but they get major brownie points for that from me.

There's even some good stuff on BBC3, you just have to look for it - In The Flesh for example and Being Human (I've also enjoyed Cuckoo and Bluestone 42, though not to everyone's liking), and I've got high hopes for Our World War which starts tomorrow.

Basically, what @0-markymark-0 said.
