The problem with passing someone like this is that you have to make it stick. In other words, to avoid the world's greatest ignominy, (being passed by someone you have just passed), you have to ride like stink whilst appearing nonchalant, and.........and.....without checking over your shoulder to see if he is coming back at you. So you can end up riding flat out for 2 or 3 miles, not knowing whether the guy is drafting you, is half a mile back, or has turned off.

The other approach is to only pass on hills, and then to wait at the top of the hill and get chatting when he catches you up. Maybe ride together for a while. That way you don't have to worry about him attempting to repass you. That's my Sunday morning preferred option.

I would agree with you if the overtaker slows down and cant hold their pace, but when the person behind speeds up just because they have been caught napping it's a bit different.

Smoking a pipe and wearing a trilby at a jaunty angle is my preference, remove pipe from gob with one hand, doff cap with the other and acknowledge the bounder,
"A jolly good day to you sir." Then pedal orf.
Works for me every time.

I hardly ever indulge in this any more, I've long ceased to care.

There was one occasion last summer when my evil side came out; some bloke overtook me as I was gazing at something and not being very focused. He was a 'big chap' on a chunky tyred steed and had plainly put some effort in to get past and I could see from a few furtive glances it mattered to him. Come a slight rise in the road I found myself behind him quite quickly and could have slipped past without much effort but I chose not to. Instead I sat back and followed him for a few miles, still going slightly uphill, his speed dropping but his effort levels going up until eventually I became alarmed for his well being and overtook him. he was red faced and hollow eyed but I took solace in knowing I'd given him a damn good workout and a tale of how he'd passed some bloke on a thin tyred racer. Well, I assume he survived to tell it.

booze and cake

probably out cycling
My nominations would be 'oh look its Tom Petty', don't do me like that, I won't back down, you wreck me, etc

Or I'd probably shout out 'plum' or 'sadsack', before roasting past them, whistling or humming, obviously.

Because they're the ones that keep getting re-scalped, they don't like it up 'em!

But what if you are a reluctant overtaker?

A few times I have been cycling along and catch up with someone who looks fast, but is not putting the effort in.
What do you do, sit behind them and go slower than you want to, or do you go for the overtake, knowing that will probably wake them up and they (may) just overtake you back.

I've said this line a few times now in different threads, but I'll say it again.
Who cares, just ride the f***ing bike.

Last Sunday I saw someone on a bike in the distance, I didn't try harder to catch him, just stayed at my normal pace, caught him up and passed. He sat on my wheel for the next 5 miles or so and when we got to a hill he overtook me. I'm not surprised as he had sat behind me for that amount of time, with me doing all the work, but did I care? No.
