Does anybody know what bike Andrew Mitchell was riding during the 'plebgate' incident? It didn't appear to have a derailleur.

With leather soles (which one hopes he has) it is hard sometimes to keep the ball of the foot over the fulcrum.

I think the bike looks an admirable workhorse for bimbling between various Whitehall departments and Smith Square. Rear guard and no front guard. Rack and basket but both looking slightly like an aesthetic afterthought and mounted at eccentric angles. Ridden hatless. Good for him!

The man may or may not be a cock (I suspect the former) but it is nice to see a senior politician on the government benches making an unshowy, unselfconscious, un-focus-grouped bid to travel more sensibly around SW1.

Call me naive for seeing it like that, but I've worked there and the majority do not do it.

Pedals with his instep too. Terribly inefficient.
Not at all, unless you like to stand up and pedal (which is not efficient to start with):

It could be a Raleigh or a Pashley. They both do models like that. Sometimes with a 3 speed 'archer gearset in the rear hub of the wheel, though this one looks like a 5 or 6 speed so no need for a front derailleur.
