They, all of them, keep moving the goalposts of this so called infrastructure.
Agreed. At least simple file transfer using USB (a common and easy to use standard) generally works the same way every time.

No moreso than the solutions offered by yourself.
Really? My first suggestion was HTTP or SFTP and that uses wifi which (N at least) often achieves similar speeds to USB2's ceiling. USB 3 (blue plugs/sockets) can go faster in theory but few devices get near that yet. All of them are faster than broadband speeds in most of the UK, which seems like Drive's bottleneck - or does it do some peer-to-peer trick I've not noticed? Even then, it's only going to reach the same as anything else using the wifi.

Make that a pot of tea, at least, because you want to make sure you have time to read all the terms of service, eg

"When you upload, submit, store, send or receive content to or through our Services, you give Google (and those we work with) a worldwide license to use, host, store, reproduce, modify, create derivative works (such as those resulting from translations, adaptations or other changes we make so that your content works better with our Services), communicate, publish, publicly perform, publicly display and distribute such content.
