It's why when I go travelling I always disable all biometric unlock from my devices.
Also, go to settings > Display and Touch > Touch Sensitivity > Enable Touch Sensitivity.
This compensates for having a display protector on the screen.
Also as a note, if you have a smart watch or similar bluetooth device you carry with you all the time, you can enable smart lock, which means that when you are within a few metres of your phone it remains unlocked as long as you are wearing your watch. If you wander off and back you'll need to unlock your phone and at least once a day usually, but it works really well.

My fingerprints are always rugged due to various manual activities.
As an EU passport holder, we have had the biometric recognition for our passports for at least 10 years.
Last time I had to renew, they had to take my fingerprint umpteen times before it worked

There is likely a screen protector setting in the menus somewhere that will rectify this. Worked on my Pixel 9.

Androids vary considerably in their fingerprint recognition placement. There is no Android "standard" for this.
My current (and previous) Samsung Galaxy have it in the bottom half of the screen, central in width. I previously had a phone which had it on the rear of the handset, and I know there are some which have it o a side button, as you suggest.

Amputation and decapitation are extreme and unlikely! They'd simply present it to my face or finger to unlock it.
I'll continue to prefer a PIN, with a factory reset implemented on the second incorrect attempt.
Only if you keep touching the part of the screen that does the recognition with the finger that you have registered

It only turns on if you press your finger on the part of the screen that contains the sensor. Which is quite a small area of screen, and it has to be the correct finger.
I've never accidentally turned mine on, in over three years of using one with the sensor in that position.

I have a bank card for paying for stuff... it's so much more convenient and faff free than a phone. Much smaller too.
