I was looking forward to getting a gripe or two off my chest in @bluepit 's recent thread, but as that one kicked off on a rather malevolent footing and snowballed from there, I thought I'd try for something a little broader in scope and hopefully more lighthearted.
Here's some things that spring to mind anyway, that I find annoying. Most concern group rides, rather than encounters with other random cyclists. And yeah, I realise that these moans likely say more about me than the anonymous targets of my ire....
- Feeling the need to maintain a bright flashing rear light, even when one or more cyclists are following close behind, in broad daylight.
- Talking about PBs, KOMs, kudos, latest updates or indeed anything to do with Strava for more than 1.37% of the total duration of the ride.
- The consumption of gels.
- Confident, adult cyclists cycling on the pavement and expecting to be treated as if they have the right of way.
- The wearing of pro team kit on a ride. Especially if Giant Alpecin or Sky, for some reason. Although if done by someone clearly overweight/not very good at cycling it can become more comedy than irritating.
- Ostentatious/performative stretching in public places. A bloke putting each leg in turn behind his neck while dressed in sweaty lycra, sitting in a busy cafe, springs to mind. A fine feat I'm sure, but totally unnecessary for any purpose other than showboating. Not to mention a bit gross. He also talked about Strava quite a lot, wore team kit and chugged down several gels during the ride, coincidentally.
- The shouting of 'car up/car back' EVERY time a car approaches from either direction, regardless of how obvious it is to all, how wide the road is, or whether or not any adjustment of the pack might be required to achieve good group roadcraft.
- Deciding a stop is required (for others to catch up, route check, whatever) and then doing it immediately, be it on a corner, a hill, wherever, rather than coasting to the next convenient verge or pull-in spot. I have done this myself. In doing so I found myself annoying. I'm not a hypocrite after all...
Of course, when any of these things occur I say nowt and just quietly have a little inner fume. I'm English after all.
Over to you...
