hi all,

first of all, sorry for another mysterious clicking noise thread.

secondly , i have seen sheldon browns website about clicking noises but I still cannot diagnose mine.

I have taken it to my local bike store and they have ridden it, tighten thigns time after time but no matte rwhat it still occurs.

Giant Defy 5 by the way

Personally i ave limited bicycle know-how on mechanical issues so need your help.

So far i have undone, regreased and rescrewed the handle bar cap to hold the bars in place.

The click does seem to be coming from the headtube/head set region, but due to revurberation it could easily be coming from the crankset. It seems to be louder if i go faster

nothing seems to wobble/feel lose.
I have done a once round on the bike adn tightened any bolts that feel loose.
About the click, it only really occurs when the bike is under some strain e.g. going up hill, over a bump in the road or down hill fast over slight bumps. Its not related to the turning of the bars as it happens if i hit a bump dead on.

I feel that if i dont get it sorted soom, i may try and get something back on warranty.

when stationary and i twist the handlebars should you hear a slight creaking noise ? or should it be silent? as mine makes a noise

last thing,, one bolt i did find that was quite loose, i didnt know what it was, it is the bolt that if you turn your bike upside down it is directly underneath in the niddle of the bike, underside of the bottom bracket? what is this?

thanks for any help

That bolt simply holds the cable guide and therefore the two gear cables in place so is unlikely to be making any noise but you'll soon know about it if it does come off.
No thoughts on the source of the noise but have you checked out this page? It's my go to for noisy things.

years ago a mate's bike developed a 'funny clicking noise', which worried him so much he stopped riding his bike for fear of causing untold damage to either his bike or himself. He then sold the bike to me and I've been riding it for 14 years with no 'funny clicking noise'... obviously the cure was to sell the bike

I have taken a look at that but can't seem to find anything that seems to be what mine is

You say you've tinkered with the headset; is there any play there?
Apply front brake and rock bike forwards; there should be no movement in forks.

Can't imagine it's the BB if it occurs without spinning the cranks.

It's not something silly like i had is it, a brake cable was vibrating on a bell which had spun itself down touching a cable?

IME it is very hard to tell where a clicking is coming from just by listening. For example, what I thought was a pretty obvious headset bearing issue, turned out to be a small crack in the rim by a spoke! Even though it really sounded like it was the headset. Worth checking the seat post too.
