another click thread... sorry

IME it is very hard to tell where a clicking is coming from just by listening. For example, what I thought was a pretty obvious headset bearing issue, turned out to be a small crack in the rim by a spoke! Even though it really sounded like it was the headset. Worth checking the seat post too.

thanks, i dont think it is seat post due to the click occuring when standing out of the saddle, do you have any ideas how to locate a noise in ways other than listening?

You haven't got cable adjusters on the cables just in front of the stem that are vibrating against each other have you?

What's the frequency? Once per pedal rev? Once per wheel rev? Once per chain rev? You can work out the last by dividing # links in chain by teeth on chainring eg 112/34 = every 3 and a bit pedal revs. [Edit. Just re read the thread and as it happens without spinning the crank this is not a very helpful post. Ho hum.]

yea sorry, the noise is pretty random. literally whenever i go over a bump

Having the same sort of issue myself. Noticed it on my last ride whenever I was putting some significant pressure on the pedals. I have since noticed that if I turn the bars from side to side I can hear the clicking noise more predominantly!
I took apart the headset and dropped out the forks, cleaned everything and re-greased........still the same !!!
I have done some reading and it seems like the headset bearings are very common to need replacing on the defys. ( I have a defy 4). Some within 12 months.
Let me know if you get to the bottom of you clicking noise as I'd be interested to find out.

thanks man,, yea it's literally driving me nuts,, i have ordered some new bike grease so when that comes i will do one last super duper grease on everything in the headset, if it still happens i will get some new bearings.

whats weird is that my LBS tightened and greased the headset and it stopped the clicking for about 40 mins then it came right back

Just to add.....tonight I wrote a thread also about this problem and someone mentioned that my centre (top cap) bolt could be too tight which could cause the creaking or ticking noise. Mine is more like a tick I would say.

how would you define a tick? and too tight, im worried if i lossened it too much it could come apart mid ride

I would say a creak would be a constant noise, where as a ticking noise would be several, or in my case 5 or 6 very close together intermittent/separate ticks. I might upload a vid tomorrow to get some more feedback perhaps.?!
Yes I was worried about the bolts not being tight enough but iv just watched some YouTube videos and they reckon there is no need to really horse the bolts down. Just torque them down enough so they're 'snug' ( was the word they used)

I think it's the fact that the topcap bolt may be too tight, also. Is there any resistance when you turn the bars from side to side?

You should be able to loosen off the top cap bolt after you have set up the steering - even remove it - as it is solely used to pre-set the headset bearings, not hold the assembly in position. The stem bolts do that. Worth loosening off the top cap bolt and giving it a test run.

Not sure if it's already been suggested but could it be the chain bouncing and tapping on something?
