you're screwed whichever side you choose, I would probably opt for the outside too to be honest but wouldn't ride into oncoming traffic.
That stretch of road has islands all along though offering some protection at intervals.
I try to avoid that stretch anyway when I go that way, would be better taking detour down anson road.

He wasn't overtaking at speed anyway really, and as he was in the face of incoming traffic I was just waiting for him to have to duck in front of a bus! The cycle lane at that point in the morning is always free flowing, you might just have to pedal slightly slower for a bit if there is someone in front of you, but he wasn't going any faster than I was on the other side IN said cycle lane. The islands may give some protection from drivers coming towards you but also mean you have to filter back in to the traffic... anyway, I thought he was nuts!

I quite like Rusholme in the mornings as it hasn't awoken yet (might change my mind if the student traffic continues at current levels!). Hometime and it's a disaster though, I have a back route through Rusholme now which is much quieter and partly off road.

yes, rusholme in the mornings is nice when you compare it to the evening, however when the smell of curry and grilled meats cooking is not in the air then the true smell surfaces, it effin stinks is all i can say.

Its mental round there, used to work for the Police, a fair percentage of cars are not insured, my uncle got knocked off his motorbike (collar bone, grazes, concussion) and the bugger drove off.

I don't RLJ, I dont need to, if I wanted to get somewhere faster I would go in the car*, motorists use RLJ'ing as an argument against cyclists and justification for treating us badly, even tolerant drivers must get riled by some pillock blasting through when they have to wait or when they time it wrong and cause people to slam on, I wont say that it should never ever be done, a cheeky left jib round a deserted junction at 2 am is kind of ok if so inclined but Birchfields/Anson Road during rush hour is asking for a swift death or at least some agro, at the very least further alienating drivers and cyclists.

*Journeys that a car would be faster for, which I accept, isnt all.

Even completely normal and legal behaviour can rile motorists. Look at all those James Blunts you so kindly brought over here with your Subaru post.
