Try Avast, it's free and competent.

Try Avira

Its free but comes with a nag screen that appears when it updates.
The good thing is the nag screen can be disabled.

It seems to keep the nasties out ok. I am running it with the Zone Alarm Free Firewall.

Interesting. I've had occasion to uninstall my AVG and not had problems re-installing. Do you get an error message when attempting re-installation?

Thanks, I'll give Avast a go.

Maz, I don't get an error message. I get a failure to install message at the end of the installation process. I can't remember exactly why it said it failed to install - I'm not really very literate computer-wise but if I try it again I'll let you know.

Avast, again. AVG always did the stop working after 6 months, fresh install thing anyway. Avast is much better.

this site is totally free and offers tutorials, links to trusted downloads, reviews. If you really have a problem you can post up a thread and they'll walk you through resolution on an individual basis. Obviously depends on your base knowledge level as to what you'll tackle but, with their help, I've cleaned up my PC, defeated a nasty virus, installed a new hard drive, installed extra RAM and answered all sorts of little niggly things.

Oh yeah, the virus, their stuff, malwarebytes, found imbedded bits that none of the other ware picked up, Norton, Zonealarm, Adaware, AVG etc.

Used norton for years. Suffered from VERY SLOW pc problems.
After changing from IE to firefox (fab!) my mate who suggested that said try Kaspersky Internet Security! SLOW pc problem solved. It has parental control and the virus databases are updated every few hours!

I'm a Norton fan and find it works well, it may slow down the computer a little bit but I feel safe using it after being let down with some of the others!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
