Hi all.
Sorry, not sure where to post this, so moderator please feel free to move/delete. Will try the "cafe" too.
I'm just enquiring as to whether anyone may know of any cycling cafés, hangouts, groups (not road clubs thanks) critical mass rides or similar events in Huddersfield ? Partner and I just starting out cycle commuting (for the reasons and benefits it gives) and really interested in supporting it, want to get more involved with the local cycling community. Any ideas, pointers, information and links greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Cheers.

Which bit of Huddersfield?

There's cycle cafe's in Mirfield (Fausto's), Thongsbridge (Albion) and Holmfirth (En Route but I tend to use Sid's or the Corner Café) plus lots of others.

In terms of groups there are clubs such as Streetbikes, who ride greenways steadily, CTC Huddersfield, Roberttown CCC, Rough Riders who do MTB's and many others. A profile of some of them is here including my club (Ravensthorpe CC) and my son's (Kirklees Cycling Academy).

Hope that helps and please ask if I've missed something.

Hi DC,
Thanks for your reply.
We live in Rawthorpe and are planning to cycle the Greenway starting on Leeds road to Midfield. But will try Thongs bridge cafe too.
Have you ridden on a Critical Mass ? Or isn't there one in Huddersfield ? We would love to do something like that.
Thanks.

There's no Critical Mass in Huddersfield at present - it's not too bad for riding. A cycling lobby group has recently started though: https://www.facebook.com/CycleKirklees/

The greenway goes from Leeds Road through to Mirfield, then from there to both Ossett (soon to be through to Wakefield and Castleford) and also up to Bradford. Almost all of that is off-road on a disused railway line.

I am in a "road club" with about 200 members, many do much the same as you want to do. Do not be put off joining a club just because of the misinformation on a lot of forums, often written by people with limited experience.

They are all better names than Grimsby, Scunthorpe, Mablethorpe, Boston.
I can't argue with that!

Always intrigues me how locals pronounce these names. We have a village here on the island named Shorwell, but locals pronounce it as Shorrell, and Whitwell becomes Whittle.

I'm guessing Heckmondwike is spoken Heckmondwick locally?

Try looking up how Happisburgh in Norfolk is pronounced.
