Found in the Yorkshire hills ...
I can't argue with that!

Always intrigues me how locals pronounce these names. We have a village here on the island named Shorwell, but locals pronounce it as Shorrell, and Whitwell becomes Whittle.

I'm guessing Heckmondwike is spoken Heckmondwick locally?

Heckmondwike is as it's written, or 'Hecky' to the locals (my kids go to secondary school there).

Try Slaithwaite for another one (it's 'slough-wit')

'Mytholmroyd' is a name that people find rather odd.

I always think that 'Upperthong' sounds vaguely rude, but with my singleton status these days it is more likely to be a case of 'Netherthong'!

Phonetically, surely it's closer to 'Slawwit'

And, Heckmondwike, is pronounced 'wyke'?

Slough, is to shed, or lose skin, isn't it?

Cudworth (north-east of Barnsley) 'Cudeth', & the home of Wayne 'the train' Randle (possibly the UKs best rider never to turn professional?)

One of my favourites from the same part of the world is Slack Top.
Just up the road from Slack Bottom. Here's me suffering from a severe case of it on a forum ride ...
