On quite a few of our cycling / driving trips around Northumberland, I have been noticing that some fields have blue bins near the perimeter. Today I finally managed to get a photo of one.

Please tell me what they are for.

A pheasant ran out in front of my car in leafy North Yorkshire and damaged the grille after I clouted it at about 30mph.

Damaged the pheasant, too, but they are a hazard to road users in parts of the countryside where there is a shoot nearby.

Well, thanks all, would never have thought of that. :okay:

Not really surprising that google images couldn't find "blue container in field on legs", but try "pheasant feeder" and there they are.

@User9609 location is just outside Alnwick near Rennington, there must be about 10 (that I could see) near the road towards Seahouses.

I think the Duke of Northumberland has some land round here for that purpose.

There is a road that is a short cut to Powburn, from the top of Alnwick moor, where the pheasants like to perch on top of the wall next to the road, waiting for any unsuspecting driver / cyclist to come along.

I just found this LINK which explains it a bit more and why they are placed where they are.

I think they're feeders, for peasants and the like....

The Duke has a mixed relationship with the locals.

He's locked horns a few times with them over plans to build loads of new houses on the outskirts of several villages - good coin in that, of course.

Thanks but no thanks. I think I'll pass.
We always have thousands of pheasants around here. When tne shooting season starts, it is nigh on impossible not to hit at least 1. They are a hazard on the roads expecially down quiet country lanes. Lots escape the hunt, they in turn breed, and then we have more of the dam things released.
