Any ideas for cheaper holidays?

Far more interesting to buy a one way ticket somewhere distant. Local buses and hostels soon make it much cheaper than Europe and far more interesting. When ready, seen enough buy a one way ticket home. Couple of months is a good start but chose somewhere interesting and you'll likely be staying longer (I only came back after 4 months in Peru, Bolivia when my Mum urgently needed to go to (medical) consultant and refused to go unless I took her).

What if you have to work and have a finite amount of holiday or like most an employer than restricts the length of a single period of AL?
Maybe the OP can't just take a couple of months away

All at sea⛵
Sleep in a different bedroom.
Different, smaller, rough towels in the bathroom.
Wear the same pants 3 days.
Rinse clothes out and leave them to dry in the bathroom.
Have different tea bags and milk and sugar in little sachets

Make bad sandwiches and go out cycling a lot

I took it OP had Oct, Nov so even a couple of months you can cover some interesting stuff.

The OP said that they were thinking of taking a trip around that time, but with no suggestion it might be for the whole of that time. And later on the first page, said they would be going for a week.

If you’re looking for a cheaper but still really fun trip in October/November, Eastern Europe is a solid choice — cities like Kraków or Budapest are great value, and Porto in Portugal is another fantastic option with lots to see and do. I came across this article about Portugal that might be useful if you’re considering it Tourism in Portugal Statistics 2023. I hope this helps you.

I'm with you on preferring public transport, ideally, but I don't think it's really an option in somewhere like Kefalonia - it's thin on the ground, infrequent, and probably not going where you want to go.
That's a bit harsh. You'd probably need to be near Argostoli or somewhere well-connected to it, such as Lixouri or Lassi, but there's quite a range of day trip options and a few frequent routes. https://www.ktelkefalonias.gr/en/routes/local-routes

It's better than many places in England. But it might be that you're set on going to somewhere with no bus service and bicycle routes don't seem to be a thing there, so you might still be stuck with the worry of renting a car.

Would echo that, same for Kotor. We stayed just outside Tivat and it was very nice. Only a ten minute taxi from the airport. We hired a house with it's own pool as we are not fans of shale beaches which of course a lot of the coast line is. Budvar and Kotor easily accessible by bus or hire bike if you want a day at these places.
Kotor is better to stay in, as it was fairly quiet before and after the cruise ship and coach trip visits. There was less ship capacity (space for just one at the quay, and one anchored using transfer boats) than many places like Dubrovnik, too, which seemed to limit the crowds.

Tivat seemed dominated by the airport but I've not stayed there. Driver attitudes to cyclists in the whole area seemed pretty scary, there are few cycleways (unlike the northern Balkan countries), and the Kotor-Tivat tunnel isn't open to cycling.
