Any legal recourse regarding job rejection?

Purveyor of fine nonsense
I recently applied for a job for which I am well qualified and got rejected, much to the amazement of someone who works for the organisation who had actually suggested me as being the perfect candidate. Her words after the event were, "I don't understand it, I really don't, you're perfect for the job!" She should know, she works for them in a high-up position and she'd advised me what would stand out in the CV!

I have since found out that the person who actually got the job is an incompetent f*ckwit, with half my experience, apparently everybody there is astounded that he was offered the job because now it means that they are having to do his job for him because he hasn't a clue, yet in the eyes of the management he's a golden boy who can do no wrong.

And here's the rub ... it's emerged that he is the nephew-in-law of the HR Boss Dude who is in charge of deciding who to employ ...

Nepotism or what?!

I'm not saying that I would have got the job anyway, but it seems it was a done deal from the outset and nobody else except for the nephew-in-law would have stood a chance! Any legal course of action possible, given that jobs are so hard to come by nowadays?

I currently work for myself, but having this job too would have been a godsend!

Hmmm I'm not sure as it is a external application and favoritism aside they don't seem to have broken any laws regarding discrimination, ageism, sexism etc

Certainly for internal applications there are legal paths to follow, or at least in my company we have an internal procedure that can be used if someone is judged to have been 'passed over' for someone for whatever reason.

An example where a police chief constable admitted misconduct for nepotism is here: http://www.bbc.co.uk...kshire-13342382

Wether that sets any precedent for you, I dont know. I think you'll just have to swallow it sorry unless you know someone within the company who wishes to fight on your behalf.

You could ask them, in order to improve your prospects of success in future job applications, to outline the reasons why you didn't get the job.

I know this is not what you want to hear, but it sounds in some ways like you had a lucky escape: if they're that rubbish at making hiring decisions, are they really going to be any better at any other kind of decision? I know, current economic climate, some job is better than no job, and all that, but console yourself with the thought that it could quite possibly be an extraordinarily bad place to work if management can't see who's competent and who's not

Too many advertised jobs are filled long before applications are read, and even more don't exist but are admin exercise to gauge the market.

If you are willing to spend your time pursuing the matter call in at your local CAB and ask their advice first, though you are unlikely to get offered the job at the end (and would you be able to comfortably work there now?)

You may cause them some (deserved) agro but depending on the industry and how cliquey it is you may end up doing yourself more harm in the long run

So that's how you got the job Ed

He's just miffed that his uselessness is not appreciated. Director of Firm Forthright Speaking, Albeit Utterly Cluesless in Every Other Way is to common a position for 3bm's extraordinary gifts anyway.
