Well I might be pushing my luck a bit calling myself a skater, but when my 3 year old got a scooter I needed some way of keeping up with her so I got my skateboard out of the loft and 'tried again'.

I haven't skated much since I was a teenager, and that was skating in a village that had nothing but loose gravel roads so the opportunities to perfect the art were somewhat limited. Yesterday I went back to the village where I grew up and they now have a skate park, so much to my daughter's bemusement and my wife's alarm I decided to have a crack at the ramps.

I'm amazed at how much fun I had on four wheels! If that place existed when I was was a teen I'd be a much better skater than I am now (as a 'nearly 40-something'), but I dare say I would be a lot more broken.

So are there any other skate 'kids' here? I'm tempted to buy a modern skateboard, one that weighs less than a baby elephant and is smaller than a family estate car. I might even finally get around to learning to ollie!

I did try and ollie on my parent's front lawn and cracked myself in the kneecap, my brother in law laughed at me and tried the same, and crocked his ankle!

Every time I went skating I enjoyed it but always ended up with a wet bum.

I'm not talking boards, needless to say.

I was never really a skater, I might have had a blast on a mates once or twice.

Skipped the skateboard for BMX as a youf then found snowboarding at around 25 yrs of age, still miss the white stuff (not that white stuff).

I used to before I developed an aversion to pain and lost the ability to bounce off concrete without needing to spend the rest of the day sat in the a&e waiting room.
If I got on my skate board now I would be in hospital with a broken wrist within 30 seconds.
Tony Hawk is still doing demo runs on huge half pipes and he's 46.
But he's starting from a higher level of compentence than almost anyone on the planet.
