Righty-ho.

Money has been refunded. Hurrah!

Via a different supplier and long telephone conversation, a Janome 8077 has been ordered. It should be here on Tuesday. I feel a lot more comfortable about this one.

Have you decided what to do with your old machine, Waffleycat?

I know of an organisation called Workaid that sends sewing machines to developing countries and trains people to use them to make clothes and earn a living. If your machine does not work, they might still like it for spares etc. I could pm you the contact details, and they would help you find your nearest donation point.

The new machine has arrived! Hurrah! I am now looking forward to getting to grips with it and its range of use. One thing I want to try my hand at is ladies' cycling attire - specifically tops, as I find the range available in the UK very limited.

For those of you who are machine buffs/have partners who are machine buffs, may I have a picking of brains please?

The Janome 8077 comes with four feet. These are:-

Zigzag foot A (seems to be the default foot)
Zipper foot E
Satin foot F
Auto-buttonhole B

So, happy seamstresses and seamsters, what foot should I treat myself to that, in your opinion, you think may be most useful in my forthcoming adventures to get back my previous skills (basic but neat) and to extend my skills?

As a guide - I'm currently finishing off a set of basic curtains and have a child's outfit to do of simple summer dress/top/shorts - in lightweight cotton. I enjoy making basic clothes for me, and will be doing some basic soft furnishing, such as curtains, cushions.. and may extend to sofa removeable soft covering. I want to locate some suitable cycle jeresy material & have a go at making my own. I don't particularly have any hankering to get into vast amounts of quilting or embroidery, but may be using the few embellishment stitches on the machine as and when, to enhance a bit of plain fabric.

So... what shall I go for?

Many thanks in advance to those who take the time to reply.

I'm now the proud owner of an Aldi sewing machine.

It might turn out to be a "sewing machine shaped object" but to use a cycling analogy, I'm new to it and it'll do fine to go round the block a few times to see if I like it.

Never used one before and had a play with it last night. Made a couple of things and didn't break it

Thanks to Speicher for lots of help and advice so far, I'll probably need more as I go along.

I've got a missus who does my 'repairs', but it usually goes in the list of 'projects' she has got on the go......

We've got a few kids round tomorrow, so she's getting the kids to draw a t-shirt design (for their build-a-bear teddies), then use fabric pens/paint and sew up t-shirts for them....

Good on you. Longers. I have a desire to learn to knit but it may be an unrequited pleasure.
