Any ship nerds out there?

Watched this boat doing "manoeuvres" last weekend, a few miles east of Plymouth. It was moving back and forth in a zig zag pattern. My first thought coming from a depth of naval knowledge one can only gain by reading The Caine Mutiny is that is was a RN training vessel, practicing minesweeping. Decided eventually that it was probably just practicing general manoeuvring. Anyway, am I at least right that it was RN? Can anyone tell me what sort of ship it is?

thanks!

http://www.marinetraffic.com/ - It won't help you in this case but it might come in useful next time you're naval gazing.

Thanks guys.

I did do an image search, but got "destroyer" which I knew was wrong.

They didn't seem drunk. They steamed past us in one direction, then turned about an went back the same way, but a little further away. Oh, unless they suddenly remembered "port == left"!

"Wave Ruler"? That's right up there with Boaty McBoatface.

Possibly doing man overboard drills, where they lob a dummy over and the crew have to recover. We watch em quite a lot when we are on the RIBwaiting to collect divers .

I have a cracking story about how not to contact them on the VHF
