I wear a base layer all year round unless it is exceptionally hot. It wicks the sweat away and stops me getting clammy next to the skin. I do sweat a great deal!
Had a 50 miler t'other weekend, temp about 5 deg.
I wore:
Base layer top and bottom, 2 more layers on body, bib longs, 2 pairs of socks, neoprene overshoes, inner and outer gloves, buff, woolly hat.
Didn't get cold!
I wear one all year round (the string vest type in summer) but since last Tuesday its been changed for a winter base layer and this Tuesday it was the full winter bibs, buff and cap under the helmet.
I haven't yet; mind you, I don't own a base layer. At the moment it's just t-shirt and jumper or waterproof jacket. If/when the snow comes it'll be t-shirt, jumper and jacket.
