A lot of the shops that got flooded here 2 or 3 times in the summer have finally fitted anti-flood panels to their doorways. I'm not convinced that the water won't find some other way in (one shop has a row of ventilation bricks in its wall!) but they had to try something. I'm walking down to the shops later and will see what the river is doing.

We have very expensive new riverside council buildings here now and the courtyard at the back is only just higher than the highwater mark of the worst flood this summer! There will be red faces and recriminations if those buildings ever flood ...

THat's only a ghost. We tend to ignore them.

The White Lady of the Lowther. An itinerant flower seller who drowned in 1872 when the then innkeeper refused her refuge on a stormy night. She returns whenever the pub floods, to gloat.

(I just made that up. Maybe I should start my own Ghost Tour;) )

A few of the roads I tried to cycle along yesterday were closed due to flooding. A couple more I could get though.
Last Thursday I went along the Trent on my way home from work, it was almost over the path then! On the opposite bank I felt for those in static caravan park, as there was a trunk pumping water somewhere, but the bank isn't that high!!

A word of warning for anyone who happens upon a flooded road and is tempted to get through, whether on foot or on a bike. Drain covers can be lifted and moved by the force of water coming up, leaving large drains exposed, which you can't see under the murky water. That's why when you see rescue workers wading through water, they often have sticks to probe the ground in front of them with.

On a bike, you might end up with a front wheel unexpectedly going down an invisible pothole. On foot, it is possible to actually drown falling into such a drain.

I've been watching the webcam, and thinking the water hasn't risen since this morning, because I'm using the top of the Lowther blackboard A-board as a datum point, because it seemed to be a couple of inches above the water, so easy to compare the level to . It occurs to me now that this might be floating (but tethered).

According to the Environment Agency, the level has indeed risen since this morning...

I'd say I'm relieved that the worst of the weather is no longer over us but since it's moved north, I won't. Round here, there's expecting river and flood levels to peak tomorrow, though anyone around the Levels isn't going to have a fun time of it.

I had 6 phone calls yesterday and another 3 today asking me if we are all right. Our home comes under Kempsey which as been a focus of main news bulletins. Although the village itself has a lot of flooding, we are on the common which is 220 feet higher than the river level.

I live up hill from the station, the victorians who built it were good at making sure it wouldn't flood so I think I'll be fine.

although the road out front does resemble a river at times.
