I've got about half a dozen midlle aged men cycling. It takes patience, slow sure starts to build confidence, small milestones to tick-off. Nice easy circular routes help. Most cyclist I know are too self-interested to take the time and gentle pace to accompany newbies. Our Freewheeling group has taken many more froma few miles on a BSO to hundred milers. All done with gentle perseverance and a few like-minded souls ... who believe every new cyclist is a triumph.

If he is not interested there is nothing you can do , my mates are also into running and keep asking me to join them , well if its 1 mile or 5 miles i will never be interested so if he says no don't take it personal .

People keep coming up with the pub idea but the nearest decent pub is, err..................too near
Some interesting comments though.
Do a looped ride with the pub at the end. Then just extend it a bit each time.

That's how I see it, if you're going to take up cycling, you'll find it yourself. Why do we need to encourage anyone? We'll come across as weirdo cycling evangelists, it's not for everyone!

He's one of a bunch of guys I socilise with and one of the few who doesn't cycle. Most of the lads get out on a Saturday morning but it's rarely I can join them due to family commitments. Anyway this other bloke, lets call him Ian cos that's his name, went out with a couple of the lads and complained of being worn out and having a sore backside, I think the 20 mile ride they treat him to was just a bit too much at this stage. I'm planning on enticing Ian out for some short tootles around the block, say 5 miles, just to get him going, then build it up from there, we have plenty of scope for good easy routes which can gradually be stretched as Ian becomes more aclimatised.
Just wondering if anyone else has ever helped get someone into regular cycling or even been an Ian themselves.

shoot him a link to my blog?

Might work ?
