Just car shampoo in hot water for me, applied with a floor hand brush. It's amazing to see how much grey gunk dribbles out of the chain and how clean and shiny the chain looks afterwards. Then I dry it with a microfibre cloth and lube later.
Have to say, I still don't follow the rationale for degreassing a chain; cleaning mud / grit off, yes, but degreassing seems to me to be absolutely the wrong idea.

Something like this will last forever in your garage and costs a fraction of the price if you water it down appropriately. Put in the time to calculate price/ml and you could find it cheaper no doubt by buying in larger sizes, you'll not need to buy it again for a decade or so. Win/win
You never really want to remove grease or oil from the inside.
A few of us went to Woburn Sands with the mtb's.
One of the group had coated his chain in a thick LM grease..
He thought it would keep the sand off the chain
The noise from his drivetrain was quite interesting
