Bicycle: a means of transport between cake-stops

It's not they way I'd choose to do it, any more than I'd choose to do a 5-day LEJOG up dual-carriageways (even if I were fit enough!), but I can still respect it as an achievement.

As for the 'not for charity', he has my respect for that too. There are way too many charity sponsorship events, and they encourage people to give a tenner here, a tenner there, rather than choosing charities they really believe in and focusing their donations of money and/or time there.

I didn't do my LEJOG as a charity event - does that make me a tw@t too?

I wouldn't do it for charity either.

Fair enough but then you probably wouldn't write a hypocritical manifesto either and personally, if you're going to do something like that you might as well link it to a worthy cause and bring some positive publicity to bear, as Rich p's quote shows, he's a bit weak on worthy causes too. The whole manifesto strikes me as apathetic tw$attery, in fact my meter went off the scale. An achievement yes but a wasted opportunity too, you only have to look at Bowthorpe's reasons for doing it to see the difference.

He's not interesting to me because he writes stuff, he's interesting to me because he's cycling a long way rather quickly, it's fantastic publicity for the bicycle as a viable form of transport and the fact that he's not doing it with the backing of some huge charity is definitely a plus for me. I think it's a bit mean to label the bloke a 'tw@t'. He's 23, all 23 year olds are tw@ts.
Anyway... Off to check if that hurricane has blown him off his bike yet.

I was following his tracker yesterday.

At 07.20 = 17277 miles
At 12.56 = 17396 miles
At 16.50 = 17452 miles
At 18.12 = 17462 miles

That's 185 miles in 11 hours, which would mean riding nonstop at 17mph.

Its now 06.00 the next day and he's showing 17563, that's 286 miles in less than 24 hours.

The weather, winds, terrain and daylight are not in his favour.

I am assuming his tracker gives a reliable live feed to his website.

Comments anyone?

Do Guinness' rules say anything about hanging onto passing mopeds? :/

"That's quite an effort, assuming he is also fully loaded with kit?"

Err I'd say, he broke the century record that morning too...

...perhaps

If the distance is off his tracker and it's anything like Bowman's, then it only sends signals every 10 minutes, so it doesn't follow the road, in fact it's just a guide. Maybe he threw his bike in a truck?
