It's not they way I'd choose to do it, any more than I'd choose to do a 5-day LEJOG up dual-carriageways (even if I were fit enough!), but I can still respect it as an achievement.
As for the 'not for charity', he has my respect for that too. There are way too many charity sponsorship events, and they encourage people to give a tenner here, a tenner there, rather than choosing charities they really believe in and focusing their donations of money and/or time there.
I didn't do my LEJOG as a charity event - does that make me a tw@t too?
