Wasn't there a CC'er looking into publishing a book awhile back?

Arallsopp published a book about his LEL using Lulu - good read it is too.

Yes, they like to keep books within a certain price range. Although I don't particularly have a problem with this in itself as it is exactly the sort of price range needed to make ebooks take off.
To get the 70% royalty rate, you have to price between £1.49 and £6.99 a copy. A 35% royalty rate is available for a much wider range of prices - £0.75 - £120. It can be a little bit more complicated than that, but that's the general picture.

Some small writers are very pleased at the deal and say they can make good money out of it.
The success of Amanda Hocking is inspiring a lot of people to have a go!

Yes, I do already know this, having quoted it several times on kindle discussions. I'm all for it if people can make it work for themselves. Unlike many bookworms I have no sacred worshipping of publishing houses, on the other hand I don't particularly want one on-line seller to dominate or DRM to take over. Even more important than money is to make things more accessible.

Surely having cheaper books does make them more accessible? Some good reads to be had for the price of 1 (or 2) Sunday newspapers. Of course there will be dross as well as gems amongst those publishing via Amazon. I wouldn't like to see one seller dominate either but it hasn't happened with music, or indeed music formats.
DRM is of course a different question.

I doubt I will be getting a Kindle, or any other kind of reader, for a long while yet.

The books I have, and enjoy reading are out of print, obscure and often illustrated. However, the thing that would make me want to get one would be a one that could read the bar code, ISBN or title on my existing books and automatically upload them free. In the mean time I have invested a small fortune in books and I don't want to have to pay again to have them on a reader, even if they were available.

But, just out of interest would Kindle, or other readers, have access to the following, randomly selected from my library?
No luck on Amazon.

Wreck and Recovery by Alan Thomas ISBN 0-85059-857-5
Move It by Bob Tuck ISBN 1-85260-018-7
Tugs Of War by Pat Ware ISBN0-9525563-1-6
The Motor Vehicle by K Newton, W Steeds, TK Garrett ISBN 0-408-01386-9
The Terror Star by Patrick Moore ISBN 00-691517-5 (I assume this is the ISBN as it doesn't say so.)

I get excellent paperbacks from Charity Shops which I give back after reading + really good hardbacks as presents too. Life on Earth, with original paper dust sleeve, for £1.50...

Me too - the Kindle was supposed to stop me using up so much bookshelf space so quickly, but I still frequently find myself coming out of charity shops with books. The problem is that if I like a book, I can't bear to give it away once I've finished it...

I suppose it's like music - even though I can get everything digitally, it hasn't stopped me buying music in physical form.

We're a two kindle household now. A 'touch' for Evey, and the bare Kindle 4 for me. Both picked up stateside. We've actually ended up registering them to different accounts, for much the same reason that we ended up having one each.
