Appraisal Personal Objectives

I worked with a guy who's appraisal was about one month before mine, so we used to write one out and just change the names and both used the same one. No-one ever noticed.

We were told to set 'SMART' targets - Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Time-limited (I think that's right - I've tried my best to forget it!).

It really is a pile of old toss. And almost everybody thinks so. In the past I've used these "opportunities" to do the following things:
a) refuse to play ball and tell whoever what an utter waste of time I think it is. I get het up, manager gets het up, and so it goes till I eventually concede and write some pile of toss down.
Liberally take the mickey
c) Write down what they want to hear, attend whatever if needed, bugger off after and have a pint/read the paper and forget it till next year.

b and c are the best options.

I don't miss it one little bit. I was involved on the giving and receiving ends of appraisal and I haven't yet met anyone who enjoyed it.

IT support monkey. Basically I just build and rebuild laptops most days. Easy, non-challenging work which suits me as I had been previously been made redundant and just want something to pay my mortgage and keep the roof over my head, then go home to the wife and enjoy my own time. The only personal objective I want to improve is how many cups of tea I can drink in a day.

Basically, I'm not career-driven or financially-driven. Just want to get a reasonable wage for what I do which is what I get.

I did just go and buy a Euro-millions ticket in a fit of pique, mind, so there's some financial drive there...

My advice would be to pick a couple of aspects of your job that YOU want to find out more about / explore ways of doing better

NO!!!!!!!!!!!! That's exactly what I'm trying to avoid, pandering to the appraisal system!

Well you can set some objectives - but fail to meet them....just to engage in the process

If you are sure that non-engagement will not end in a disciplinary and a note on your file then resistance is an option

Personal objectives : learn to play the piano and ride a unicycle

I've had this stuff for years, the main benefit is that it's honed me into the consumate liar meaning each subsequent year gets easier.

i think i'm going to put down one of my personal objectives as attempting to maintain employment in the current job climate. that's obv challenging and can be measured against all sort of recession and unemployment statistics.
