Are better wheels really a step up ?

Hi Zak,

It’s not clear what your criteria are for comparing wheels, but as a regular turbo rider I thought I’d share my experience.

I turbo train 2-3 times a week, on an argon18 TT, peaked single session volume last year at 4hrs45.

At first I put my old roadie miche reflax wheels on it, hard to describe but it was awkward at times maintaining consistent power output. Nowadays I have Campagnolo Bullet 80s on it and it’s a much much smoother experience on the trainer. These are my race wheels, I don’t run a trainer tyre, but then I have got a back log of tyres to work through - currently using Vitoria Pro III.

I don’t know, but there is a lot of chatter about turbos wrecking vs not affecting wheels at all. All I know is that my cheapest wheel was a pain on the turbo, and turbo training is enough hassle as it is.

Hi, thx for reply.
I'm not sure I want to use regular road tyres on the TT, I managed to ruin a Schwalbe One in about 8/9 days when I first got the Wahoo, hence got a Schwalbe Trainer Tyre, and thats still perfect. God knows how expensive it would be otherwise !

Update: It seems that my wheels, Axis 4.0's that came on the bike, are this Specialized SCS Hub, which is a pain in the neck, and means getting a spare wheel to keep just for the TT is tricky.
Seems that if I wanted to buy a new Road Set of wheels, which would undoubtably be better than the Axis's, I can run normal Hubs as long as I fit a different Mech Hangar, as the SCS one is slightly cut away....... too difficult to explain fully, but see here if you're interested

So .... a new Wheelset & Hangar, and I'd be good to go on the road, but would then need to fit a new Hub on the old Axis wheel to then use it as a dedicated TT tyre !! Dohhhh - I imagine that would cost me circa £60 for a new Hub, plus labour to respoke it !

This is getting out of hand !!

Been looking at new Wheels, and hard to know whats best......but from what I've read, at 95kg's, I'd be perhaps best with 28 or 32h spokes.
Hunt's look good, and very reasonable @ £299.......I'd perhaps need to go for their Gravel versions....https://www.huntbikewheels.com/coll...vel-disc-road-cx-wheelset-1589g-24deep-24wide
Wheelsmiths look good, Handbuilt......nice 30mm 'semi aero' and choice of Hubs, and fab reviews, and choice of spoke options.......http://www.wheelsmith.co.uk/product-page/race-30
LBS store have offered me a set of 2017 Mavic Ksyrium Pro's, at £550 instead of £750/800, but not Tubeless. https://shop.mavic.com/en-gb/ksyrium-pro-ust-disc-rr0972.html#1028=3283
The DT Swiss ER 1600's look great, 32mm deep Alu, DT Hubs, and Front & Back for just over £400. https://www.dtswiss.com/en/products/wheels-road/endurance/er-1600-spline/er-1600-spline-32/
and local Spesh Dealer is advocating a set of Hope 20Five's with Hope RS4 Hubs, @ £400.
http://www.hopetech.com/product/hope-20five-rs4-s-pull-centre-lock/

Undoubtably I feel sure the Roubaix would suddenly feel a lot livelier with any of the above on, but I'd still have the issue to solve for the TT wheel !
And yes, ideally...... I'd like to keep a dedicated wheel for the TT, as the tyre is a bitch to get on and off,
and I know what would happen, I'd give up using it.

I feel your pain. As I mentioned earlier in the thread I went through the same SCS related faff last year. I ended up getting a pair of 2016 Ksyrium Pro discs at a good price and a pair of 2016 Aksium discs second hand as winter/trainer wheels. And of course the non-SCS gear hanger.

If you decide to stick with SCS I've got a pair of Axis 2.0's in the roof of the garage with only a few hundred miles on

Thx .......How much better did you find the Ksyrium's ?

Thats a thought, I guess I 'could' just stick with the Axis 4.0's, and perhaps do a little deal for your 2's to use the rear solely on the TT.......

The Fulcrums are just plain bad wheels, cheap as chips, equally cheap as chips Mavic Askiums on my road bike have more mileage and are still sweet ! But two free hubs in 6 months is just poor design and don`t get me started on replacing, you have to remove a bearing to get an Allen key in lol , bleedin joke. Sorry ranting here.
At worst, they MAY be variable in quality. My Fulcrum 5 Evolutions were brought in 2010 or 2011. I'e never had a spoke go out of true and as said in former discussions, I once put a front wheel down a storm drain that went with a hell of a bang..no damage barring a scratch to the rim, not buckled, nothing. I was convinced as it went...well thats that then, but no.
I still have them on my main bike with no doubt theyve got plenty of mileage in them. Pitifully easy to strip and service to boot.
While I've been light in mileage on the bike for a couple years, they did circa 6000 miles a year for say 4 years.
Some of Fulcrums range may be worse but some are very good value and quality IME.

I’m not sure how to respond to that, other than this is far more complex than it needs to be.

How about surgically replacing your legs with pistons? Seems simpler.

The Ksyriums were a marked improvement over the Axis 2.0's but theres less difference between the Ksyriums and Aksiums. I've got Cosmic Pro Carbons on the other bike, they're another level up again but slightly more susceptible to sidewinds.

How far from Suffolk are you? I've been trying to sell the Axis 2.0's for some time and have essentially given up so if you can collect you can have them for nowt, otherwise I'd have to see how much postage would come to. They've got no discs, tires or cassette mind - I stripped the useful stuff off to put on the Aksiums  If you stick with SCS I've got a spare gear hanger you can have too, it's no use to me once I shift the SCS wheels

Thats very kind of you, but I'm way 'oop North in the wilds of East Yorkshire, so hardly likely to pass by.
In reality its only the rear I'd be using, but before I put you to any trouble in finding postage etc, i'll make a decision on whether to change/upgrade first, or stick with this SCS issue and the Axis's.
I've not had any issue with them on the road per se, but then again, perhaps I'm a little blind to how lively and more efficient much better wheels might be,
i've never used any decent wheels or upgraded before, so I'm perhaps a little in the dark so far on that.

No worries. If you decide they'd come in handy I'll grab them down from the garage roof, otherwise they can stay where they are

I guess this is the down side to disk brakes , my turbo wheel cost £50 .
Do you actually need the disk brake wheel seeing as you wont be using the brake ?

I wish it was that easy....... but the Specialized SCS system involves a specific Hub width, and gear hanger, which means that any different wheel for the turbo would cause gear issues if it wasnt identical. Too much to explain here, but its a pain.
