No risk of that here…..I struggle to get out nearly enough, especially in the winter months 🫣

Not an addict but since I retired cycling has helped fill the 'work' gap. I spend endless hours in the garage fettling, work as a volunteer for a bike charity and build more wheels than is good for me. I get rims, hubs, spokes and rim tapes before they end up in the scrap and build wheels that can be used on refurbished bikes. I get 3 x 3hr rides a week in too. I still manage to get a few domestic chores/DIY jobs done to stay married

Weeell... you could substitute cycling with so many other pursuits -angling, football, birdwatching, constructing a replica of Crewe junction in the shed. Sometimes it's healthy for two people to spend time away from each other doing different things, maybe it's even the thing that enables them to tolerate living with each other in later years. More practical than separation, less expensive than divorce. I wonder how many people stick together to the bitter end because they ultimately can't afford to live apart. If you can afford it, splitting up is achievable. For many, they just have to make the best of things somehow. People change and sometimes grow apart. Not everyone finds their soulmate, even if they think they have at first.

It does sound familiar. My emerita wife got very into exercise before we split up. But you could probably apply it to any form of personal development that separates you from your spouse. When the relationship has broken down you put your energy into self improvement and solo activities. It's a symptom, not a cause.

The flip side is that I've been doing a lot more cycling since we split up. I only have the car on the days I've got the kids so the bike is my main mode of transport and I'm perfectly happy with that.

…interesting. I recently read Geraint Thomas' autobiography According to G. One of the most enjoyable things about it was the way he and his wife Sa managed to work out a harmonious lifestyle in spite of all the rigours of a professional cyclist's life. Worth the read for that alone; and encouraging to know that it can be done. Available here, and digital editions also available.

Slightly different when it’s your job and you are paid to do it.
