Once, out in the country lanes, I passed an old man and called out "Good Morning".
He replied "I woke up - it's a good morning"

I hope so. It always seems a shame when I see people on what appears to be a leisure/fun/family ride and they look thoroughly miserable. Why bother if you don't like it?

I can understand if you're struggling to/from work in horrible weather or you're doing some hard training.

I am when I get smiles/waves back from people on shared paths after ringing the bell as a hello/warning, it's a right downer though to pass several people and it's just thousand yard stares back at you.

The Costa Clyde rain magnet.
I'm always cheery when cycling, subject to the following conditions:

It's not raining.
It's not windy.
It's not cold.
There is no vehicular traffic.
There are no dog walkers.
There are no other feckin cyclists!!
The road (or path) surface is good.
I don't get hungry, and if I do there is a reasonably priced, good quality source of food on my route at the appropriate time.
The bike does not suffer from any mechanicals, including punctures.
Most importantly - no feckin busybody asks me where my helmet is!!!
