That's ~21 degrees Celsius! I'd be cooked at that temperature, as I find about 8 degrees is the short/leggings boundary.

Nope still have longs on........... on the Road bike........... MTB then will be shorts at 20c............

It's not your legs that radiate heat, it's your body........... go get correct kit on your body...... I keep my legs warm.... they work better...........

  • Prevention And finally, don't forget about prevention. Why did the pain develop in the first place. Overuse is the big one, but also consider these possibilities:
    • Correct biomechanics - follow suggestions above
    • Consider a complete bike fit
    • Choose gears that allow a cadence of at least 75 - 80 RPM
    • Don't make big changes in your training program - increasing mileage by more than 10% a week is a risk factor for injury as is over zealous interval training.
    • Keep your legs covered in cold temperatures - there is no scientific proof, but plenty of individual experience that suggests this will decrease injuries. (And the hassles of knee or leg warmers is reasonable insurance if you are prone to knee pain or leg strain.)

Thanks GA for all that evidence, and you only have to look at a professional roadie who never comes out of longs until around 17C +, for me I have always changed into shorts at anything over 15C.
Come on fess up, there must be someone on here not shy about telling us why they want to risk knee injury in this freezing weather.
Should we stop them and say something? After all we would be doing them a big favour. l

2 x pairs of gloves, 2 x pairs of socks, wooly hat and shoes, long sleeved base layer top with bib longs and tights plus merinho jersey and jacket are my minimum lately with temperartures around freezing to 2 degrees.

I dont worry about the weight of my bike with this lot on.

If you can't be bothered, neither can I. I've enough research to be getting on with.

I've got my winter cruisers ready for tomorrow and they'll be on everyday until May, when I might then change to the summer ones

shorts could make a brief appearance in July/Aug but only if it's very warm.

Very happy to wear longs until the weather gets much better myself. Last year was around late March I started wearing shorts again...I know mine wouldn't work in this temperature.

But, and I hope tomorrow will remedy this with a jacket buying trip, I have a problem with upper body heat. At the beginning of December I remember going out with a cheap long sleeve jersey and a Karrimor Jacket over the top. I'd got 3 miles down the road and it was too damned hot. I had to roll up the jacket and tuck it away in some hidden undergrowth to pick up on my return. Okay, probably the cheap material doesn't breathe too well lending itself to getting too hot, but you'd think that more of a problem in spring perhaps...but this was December and though above freezing, just, I thought to myself how easily uncomfortable I become in the top half during such invigoration  .

Anybody else the same? What should I buy tomorrow because I'm well past the date that I should have bought a decent winter (and breathable) jacket?

I can cycle in shorts in any weather, it's ok once you get going but I prefer to wear longs, I've never had any issues with my legs overheating, upper body yes, but not legs.

But it must be an age thing as well, I've been on the golf course wearing base layer, polo shirt, jersey and windproof, with buff and woolly hat, along with others in similar attire. We've often seen youngsters(early teens to early twenties) wearing base layer and polo shirt max and sometimes just the polo shirt. Golf may be many things but it's never going to be accused of something you can work a sweat up at.

I shall be out in 'longs' today as the forecast is for only 17c.

21c is the sort of temperature we expect in the winter.

October 1st and the Spanish are in Fur coats, because the temperature has dropped to below 25c..............
