I've been happy enough to wear shorts this time of year, never knew it could do as much damage as some on here suggest, however, as I get some minor inflamation every ride I go on, keeping the knees cool helps keep this down

Why would cold legs result in damage?

My theory is this:

Joint strain is all too often due to indaquate support from muscles. How else would power lifters do their stuff without seriously injuring themselves if the extra muscle did not protect the joints a prime example being their backs? How else do pro cyclists push big gears without harm when lesser mortals would knacker their knees?

However, muscles depend on a good supply of oxygenated blood to do their stuff.

When cold, the blood supply to the extremities is restricted and thus the supply of oxygen to leg muscles will become inadequate. Leg joints such as the knee will not receive the support from cold muscles that they would from warm muscles and will suffer.

I've never experienced any knee pain due to exposed knees in cold weather. I was out for 2 hours on Sunday, temp's didn't get above 2C and everything was fine. Now if it's below freezing or wet I will cover my legs, but I don't think there's any need otherwise. And from the lack of scientific or medical links to data on this concern, it all seems to be just a bunch of opinions and conjecture by others.

Pros push big gears because they train to do so. Squats are a great way to strengthen knees and the muscles that support them.
