Sorry to hear that! I hope you are ok. You've been through a lot recently, I hope you are taking a holiday!

Glad to hear that BCM Killer is.... less of a killer!

Edit: Although more seriously, is it just me who has often noticed that drivers with windows up and music on are very often quite unresponsive to auditory cues such as emergency sirens?

Oh yes. Many's the time I've been aware of a siren (on my bike or on foot) well before any motorists react. Of course, in the open, one probably also has better directional input, so you can gauge where a siren is coming from better. Also, it helps if you know an area, and can therefore guess the liklihood that an emergency vehicle is going to be coming your way, even when you can only hear it faintly...

With regard to OP, yes, the taxi driver shouldn't have hooted, and the green light only gives him permission to proceed with caution.. And some junctions can be a right pain to get across on a bike due to timing - there are few where I know that if I cross a green, it can be red by the time I'm actually across - a wide road, and a slight gradient can really slow one down... There's another where oncoming traffic is always so heavy that in order to turn right, if you aren't at the front, when the lights go (they are phased to give a slight head start one way), you'll be stranded in the yellow box, and then have to go in the amber when the other traffic slows (assuming it doesn't just pile through on amber and the beginning of red). By which time, you are conflicting with pedestrians crossing on a green man. I often slow down if I'm approaching that one on green, because I'd rather wait on red and have a head start, than end up in the yellow box (which I think I'm right in saying I'm allowed to enter if I'm turning right?)

Don't think you're allowed to enter it until the exit is clear, regardless of whether you are turning right or not (someone will be along to say otherwise though probably!).

Box junctions. These have criss-cross yellow lines painted on the road (see 'Road markings'). You MUST NOT enter the box until your exit road or lane is clear. However, you may enter the box and wait when you want to turn right, and are only stopped from doing so by oncoming traffic, or by other vehicles waiting to turn right.

bikes can be slower through big junctions even if they do obey the lights, a good driver should allow for that

Indeed...

And something else that IVe not read in this thread...

Something I remember from my driving lessons a few years ago... Motor vehicles should always, in principle give way to slower more vulnerable vehicles.

As such th e cab driver should have waited patiently for the 30 seconds before the cyclist passed him/her

Yes, it's quite possible to have made it through the lights quite legally, and take that much longer than the remaining vehicles that you end up having some conflict with vehicles dashing off from their newly green light.

That is what I thought, thanks... I had asked on here before.

Even so, I will sometimes just wait behind the line on green and wait through the red for my little head start, in preference to being stranded in the road. Luckily, the road I come down is a deadend for cars, so not heavily trafficy. The other way, on the other hand, is a major route through town, hence the continual oncoming (well, left turning actually) traffic...

I've always thought this - perhaps because I learnt about strict rules like this for aircraft at about the same time as a learnt to drive.

Powered craft give way to gliders who give way to paragliders.

Actually chastising a car driver for that seems entirely reasonable. Inflicting your own music on others is a far worse (well, more irritating) crime than simply listening to your own.

It can count against you if you have an accident and you are listening to loud music, as its considered a distraction.
