Sunday morning was going to be my first 50 mile attempt, so off i set in beautiful weather on my new Giant, shod in its brand new Conti 4 Seasons which just set me back 70 notes. All going well until i hit this sharp stone around half-way which blew the rear tyre. I put the new tube in and was checking the tyre when i saw my finger poking through a 2cm rip in the sidewall
Managed to bodge it up by stuffing some grass inside but had to cut short the ride and limp home carefully.
Just frustrated that its happened to an expensive tyre on its first outing, has anyone else had this happen, or is it just my sheer bl**dy bad luck? (although in fairness to the tyre, the stone looked like it would get through anything really, just annoyed that i didn't see it early enough!)

On the plus side i still managed 35 miles, which is the furthest I've ever cycled in one go, so not a total disaster

Have done the same. Brand new tyre, hit a pot hole, hard.. blew the tube and the sidewall.

Congrats on your longest distance.
Not much more to push your next ride to a 50.

It is bad luck. For the fruture, a used foil gel wrapper works a treat and would probably have got you home fine
Yeah, i was thinking about having something with me in future, heard that a piece of toothpaste tube works too. I was even thinking of cutting a small piece off the old tyre, just to keep in my repair kit just in case the same happens again, would that be ok too, or maybe a bit too thick?

4 miles on a brand new GP4000s and hit a boulder which tore the tyre and cracked the rim , lorries at a nearby development had dropped debris for about half a mile along the road:cursing:

Did you look at the stone as it lay in the road waiting for you? That was your mistake - look at it and you'll hit it.

Ha, well i saw it too late, managed to get the front wheel out of the way but not the back. Big sharp bugger it was

Skip lorries and the like dropping half bricks and other rubble can be the beginnings of a pileup. You can get in a lot of trouble for driving a lorry with a load that isn't properly secured. If it was recent, report the developer to Plod.

Ripped a Conti 4 Season and dented a brand new wheel on the first ride. It does happen sometimes. Incredibly frustraiting. Lost a 4 Season and a new Mich Pro 4 Endurance so far this year on huge pot holes, oh and two dents on a set of wheels less than 4 months old.
