I would expect the majority of young cyclists who have never had any training to see a bicycle painted in these feeder lanes and to want to then feel encouraged to filter up on the inside of vehicles to get into position in an ASL

Then this morning, I see this on the back of a lorry. so what is wrong....LA's encouraging people without the experience to make the judgment call which might put them in mortal danger by officially painting cyclist signs in filter lanes to ASL's on congested junctions, or the unoficcial signage on the back of HGV's warning the cyclists to not filter up the side of them in the same situation.

We see empowerment being foisted by the authorities, but I wonder whether that is an entirely good thing in this instance.

Should ASL's be phased out (or at least these feeder lanes)....the idealism behind them can't be worth someone s life can it ?

I'm in favour of scrapping them too; at best there's the argument when a cyclist is there asl's put the vulnerable cyclist in a more visible spot but I just think they serve to encourage the less able to squeeze through that dodgy area and if they make to sit in front frusrtating drivers and IME a lot of abuse/bad driving is down to fustration rather than actuall hatred.

Lets consider another scenario?

Dual carriageway and a set of lights.
HGV in outside lane.

Would you reccomend that cars should not use the inside lane?

Would you consider an HGV that then turned across tha inner lane dangerous?

HGV on wide road swings wide to take a left hand corner. Car goes up the inside & gets its bonnet driven over. This is a far more accurate approximation of events with an ASL.

Cyclecraft and bikability say: (when on a bike!) never ever place yourself at the left of a lorry, plus you're supposed to take primary at a junction anyway, wherever direction you are going. So, yes, scrap the feeder lanes.

In my works BUG I didnt quite convince people that a lot of ASLs are badly designed, I might try linking to Magnatom's article to see what they think.

It is simply down to knowledge of the road, junction and timings of the signals.

With this plan, you are reliant on the intimate knowledge of the situation to keep you safe

I've done advanced motorcycle training, and the first thing they drum into you is that you must ride on the information which has been presented to you, and not that it is safe to chance it because you know they layout of the junction, road ahead or timing signals. You could squeeze up the side of a hgv, only to get caught by a pedestrian crossing your path...or a car running a red from another direction blocking your exit...anything can happen, and unless you can see the whole picture, you hang back until you can...

People who have had zero road training cannot be expected to make the judgment call you propose.

Which is exactly what I said and meant.

On the junction I am referring to it is simple and safe

I am not talking about you, I am talking about total novices who are getting conflicting instructions from the back of lorries and painted cycles on the road surface in feeder lanes inviting them to filter and have neither the training or intimate knowledge to make an informed choice.....read the OP please
