After the death of Fabio Casartelli back in the 1990s, many on here will remember, they agreed to continue with the TdF but the next day's stage was run non-competitively, with all of his Motorola team-mates crossing the line together, slowly, ahead of the bunch. I remember watching that event on TV: a most poignant symbol, not in any way sentimental, but thought-provoking all the same. I'm sure many others remember that moment.

Maybe something of the sort could have been done here, though it's not an entirely similar situation.

I would imagine that for the future a simple solution would be to put some sort of mesh wire/netting above the track so that somebody who makes that kind of mistake can't come flying out of the track.
