Some massive antique iron park gates were stolen in Sheffield - in a busy area - not one witness saw them go. It was assumed they'd been melted for scrap.
They turned up 17 years later on a farm in Derbyshire. Strangely, South Yorkshire Police didn't put too much effort into their enquiries into how the farmer had come by the gates. http://www.sheffieldtelegraph.co.uk/news/local/wrought_with_mystery_1_3212725
My old mate Steve Ovett had his statue nicked some years ago from a local park...
A stolen statue of Olympic legend Steve Ovett will cost £30,000 to replace after it was found smashed to pieces.
The bronze figure was hacked from a plinth in Brighton and a leg was found in a bonfire after thieves tried melting it.
More was recovered but sculptor Peter Webster said: "It's utterly gone."
Police cautioned a woman after she tried selling pieces for scrap.
